When we give our allegiance to everything but God, why do we think He will listen to us?

Philip serves as Executive Director of Grace Fellowship Canada. For over 20 years, he's been on a mission, planting churches from coast to coast in Canada.

I was struck by God taking the prophet Ezekiel through Jerusalem to one place after another where the elders, the priest, the women, and the men were all giving worship to other gods.

Ezekiel 8:17

He said to me, “Have you seen this, son of man? Is it a trivial matter for the house of Judah to do the detestable things they are doing here?

God calls these things detestable, and as He takes Ezekiel to each place, He calls out the idea that these actions are unspeakable. He asks Ezekiel do you see this?

Ezekiel 8:18

Therefore I will deal with them in anger; I will not look on them with pity or spare them. Although they shout in my ears, I will not listen to them.”

God is a jealous God. He is betrayed when we seek after other things and look to other gods.

Then, we add Him to one of many ways to meet our needs. Like somehow, that shows God He is loved, valued, and trusted.

Thought experiment – try that with our wives and see if she wants to be loving towards us. Does this make her evil or bad that she will not overlook or minimize our making her just one of our many lovers?

Somehow, we fully empathize with our wives when betrayed, but we oddly despise God for our mistreatment of Him.

God you deserve our honor, worship, and praise.

In You alone do we place our trust.

Forgive our wandering hearts.

I am reminded of one of my favourite old Hymns written by Robert Robinson the phrase “prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love. Take my heart Lord, take and seal it. Seal for thy courts above.”
