Do we want to be like everyone else, or do we want to be like God?

The prophet Ezekiel is given an incredible vision of what God is doing. God shows him the judgement that is happening to Israel and even tells him of how God will protect a remnant and return them to restore Israel.

But why the judgment? What had the people done?

We see in Ezekiel 11:12

for you have not followed my decrees or kept my laws but have conformed to the standards of the nations around you.”

We, humans, have not evolved; we are the same 2,500 years later. We wrestle with the same things and fall into the same traps.

We want the acceptance of man over God. We value others’ opinions over God’s words. We think doing what others do will bring more happiness or success than following God.

I am reminded of Paul’s admonition in Romans 12:2

Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

The temptation to go along with the crowd. To believe that the grass is greener. To value the acceptance of others over God.

Not a new thing. As Solomon says there is nothing new under the sun.

Let us put God first in our lives. Let us choose His ways over the ways of this world. Let us want to be more like Him.
