When we sin against someone, we need to go to them and make it right — 2 Samuel 19:18-20
We see this played out with Shimei.
He had held a grudge and then dishonored the king as he was fleeing Jerusalem.
But now the king was returning.
2 Samuel 19:18-20 (NIV84) “When Shimei, son of Gera crossed the Jordan, he fell prostrate before the king” “and said to him, May my lord not hold me guilty. Do not remember how your servant did wrong on the day my lord the king left Jerusalem. May the king put it out of his mind.” “For I your servant know that I have sinned, but today I have come here as the first of the whole house of Joseph to come down and meet my lord the king.”
When we wake up and discover we have sinned, we should not cover it, ignore it, hide or run away.
We need to go to the person we have wronged and make it right right away.
I am reminded of Matt 5:24.
We see in this situation that though David could have had this man killed, he spared his life and forgave him. Shimei had the courage and the character to go to the person he had wronged.
May we make things right with those we hurt right away and face to face.
