A prophet is without honour in his own country.

These are Jesus’ words John 4:44. People who He had grown up with took Him for granted and couldn’t see who He was.

We find that a man from a two-day journey came all the way to see Jesus so that his son would be healed. We read that this was the second miraculous sign that Jesus performed.

Yet, He was there in Galilee, and no one saw Him for who He was.

Incredibly, this royal official is travelling for two days to see Jesus.

He pleads with Jesus for his son.

Jesus is frustrated with the people’s need for miracles/signs to believe.

John 4:48

“Unless you people see miraculous signs and wonders,” Jesus told him, “you will never believe.”

Undeterred and not tracking with Jesus’ concern, he is focused on his son’s needs.

John 4:49-50

49 The royal official said, “Sir, come down before my child dies.”

50 Jesus replied, “You may go. Your son will live.”

We discover that is exactly when his son was healed. After walking for a day back home, the royal official meets his servant, who had journeyed to tell him his son was well. They conferred and discovered it was the exact time Jesus told him his son will live.

John 4:53-54

Then, the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” So he and all his household believed.

54 This was the second miraculous sign that Jesus performed, having come from Judea to Galilee.

Praise God the man’s family believed, but what about the Galileens?

This was the second sign, and they had seen all Jesus had done while in Jerusalem.

It makes me wonder what we are too close to, too comfortable with and already formed our opinions about to appreciate fully.

Jesus was the Messiah, God’s Son, and those who grew up with Him were still not listening and wanted more proof of His authority and who He was.

May our familiarity not dull us from seeing the wonder of who Jesus is. May we marvel and worship Him. May we not overlook Him, because we take Him for granted.
