Pride comes before a fall. — 2 Samuel 18:9, Numbers 32:23
I am reminded of this when I read the story of Absalom. He is full of himself. Sadly, he was given every advantage in life. He was a prince, the kings son. He was handsome and charming. He had influence and so much more.
He may well have become king once David had passed.
But his pride led him poorly. He kept taking matters into his hands as in his sister’s justice and then his scheme to take the throne.
After raising an army to take out his own father, he was running from battle, and this is what happened:
2 Samuel 18:9 (NIV84): Now Absalom happened to meet David’s men. He was riding his mule, and as the mule went under the thick branches of a large oak, Absalom’s head got caught in the tree. He was left hanging in midair, while the mule he was riding kept on going.
Absalom is caught, most likely by his hair he was so proud of, and left helplessly dangling from a tree.
My mom used to remind me of this verse as a point of wisdom:
Numbers 32:23 (NIV84): you may be sure that your sin will find you out.
