Jerusalem was under constant attack by Babylon. And king Zedekiah had some choices to make. His court and council had told him one thing, yet the prophet Jeremiah had been telling him another.
The king privately asks Jeremiah again what God say I should do. Jeremiah tells him.
Zedekiah responds:
Jeremiah 38:19
Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “I am afraid…”
Jeremiah again encourages Zedekiah to obey God.
Jeremiah 38:20-21
Jeremiah replied. “Obey the Lord by doing what I tell you. Then it will go well with you, and your life will be spared. 21 But if you refuse to surrender, this is what the Lord has revealed…”
But no, Zedekiah doesn’t obey God and the city is captured and burned, and Zedekiah is killed.
Why is it that even if we do the right thing by seeking God, we do the wrong thing anyway?
Fear!
We are more afraid of people than God.
Oh, if I would obey God and what He says.
It is before us. Let us seek God. Let’s read His word. And may we obey it even when we fear what others may think, say, or do.
