How do we respond to God’s call? When God speaks to us, how do we respond?

In Luke’s Gospel, we see two miraculous encounters with the angel Gabriel.

The first is with Zachariah in the temple, and the second is with Mary.

The angel tells Zachariah you will have a son and he responds.

Luke 1:18

Zechariah asked the angel, “How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years.”

The angel closes Zechariah’s tongue and he cannot speak until the baby is born.

Gabriel comes to Mary and tells her she will have a son and He will be the Son of the Most High.

However, she does ask how since she is a virgin. The angel tells her God will do this, and this is her response.

Luke 1:38

I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May it be to me as you have said.” Then the angel left her.

She goes to visit Elizabeth, Zechariah’s wife and upon her voice coming into the hearing of Elizabeth, her baby jumps in her womb and Elizabeth says to her:

Luke 1:45

Blessed is she who has believed that what the Lord has said to her will be accomplished!”

Wow! Mary’s faith and her surrender. No wonder God chose her.

What is our response? When God comes to us when He asks us to follow Him? When it seems impossible? When we don’t know how? When we can’t see?

May we respond like Mary:

“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May it be to me as you have said.”
