We see this incredible calling of John the Baptist. His miraculous conception, and upon his circumcision on the eighth day, his mother and father knew to call him John.
Upon this confession by his father, his tongue is loosed from being dumb for nine months, and he prophesies over his son.
Luke 1:76-79
And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High;
for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him,
77 to give his people the knowledge of salvation
through the forgiveness of their sins,
78 because of the tender mercy of our God,
by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven
79 to shine on those living in darkness
and in the shadow of death,
to guide our feet into the path of peace.”
What a calling:
Preparing the way for the Lord.
To give knowledge of salvation – the forgiveness of sins!
This light will come to us, living in darkness in the shadow of death.
Here, under the sun. On this side of eternity. In this fallen world. We live in darkness. We live in the constant reality of death.
Praise God for His tender mercy. He has brought the light of the world. Salvation for all of us. Forgiveness for our sins. Victory over death.
He brought Jesus to save us all!
