John’s gospel starts with his telling of the life of Jesus with “the Word” – logos.

John 1:1-4

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning.

3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men.

The Word was from the beginning with God and was God.

The Word made all things; in fact, nothing was made without Him.

The Word was life, and this life brings light, hope, and direction to all mankind.

John says that the world that the Word created did not recognize Him—in fact, rejected Him.

Yet, we see in verse 14:

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.

This is beyond our ability to comprehend.

God becoming human and putting on flesh!?! – (incarnation)

God with us!?! – (immanuel)

Why would the logos – the Word – the creator God – come to live among us? Us humans? Who deny His existence and wander about in our self-importance and lostness.

Why would One who was from the beginning, Who made all things be concerned about us?

We see in verse 12:

Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—

The Word, the Logos, wanted us to become children of God. He came to us to invite us into a relationship with Him.

If only we would receive Him and believe in His name.

We, too, can become children of God.

By receiving the Word, by believing in His name. The Word became flesh and lived with us.

Jesus
