What are good qualities to look for when appointing leaders?

Philip serves as Executive Director of Grace Fellowship Canada. For over 20 years, he's been on a mission, planting churches from coast to coast in Canada.

Nehemiah had led the people to build the walls and gates of Jerusalem. He was under constant pressure, intimidation, and plots to thwart the work.

But they persevered.

Now he was to appoint leaders, and we read in Nehemiah 7:2

Nehemiah 7:2

I put in charge of Jerusalem my brother Hanani, along with Hananiah the commander of the citadel, because he was a man of integrity and feared God more than most men do.

Later we read in Nehemiah 13:13

Nehemiah 13:13

I put Shelemiah the priest, Zadok the scribe, and a Levite named Pedaiah in charge of the storerooms and made Hanan son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah, their assistant, because these men were considered trustworthy.

I would say Nehemiah had some good qualifications: integrity, fearing God, and trustworthy.

These qualities should be in my life, and we should look for when finding and appointing leaders.
