The Unforgivable Sin
By which spirit?
It is interesting how the gospel of Mark focuses on the demonic world. In Mark chapter three, Jesus calls his disciples and names His apostles. He not only called them to preach but:
Mark 3:15
and to have authority to drive out demons.
We go on to read that his family thought He was out of His mind, and the religious leaders had another theory:
Mark 3:22
And the teachers of the law who came down from Jerusalem said, “He is possessed by Beelzebub! By the prince of demons he is driving out demons.”
Jesus questions their logic:
Mark 3:23-24
So Jesus called them and spoke to them in parables: “How can Satan drive out Satan? 24 If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.
Then Jesus rebukes them and warns that accusing Jesus of being led by Satan was a bridge too far.
Mark 3:28-30
I tell you the truth, all the sins and blasphemies of men will be forgiven them. 29 But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of an eternal sin.”
30 He said this because they were saying, “He has an evil spirit.”
The unforgivable sin. The blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. Ultimately calling the Holy Spirit a liar. Denying what God, through His Spirit, is saying to you about who Jesus is. God’s Spirit, the Holy Spirit, His job is to convict us of our sin and reveal who Jesus is to us in our hearts and minds.
When we decide to deny that Jesus is God’s Son and if we decide we will not follow Him. We are blaspheming the Holy Spirit, calling what He is saying in our hearts a lie and finding radical excuses for why we don’t have to follow Jesus.
Jesus is God’s Son. Jesus is the only way to have forgiveness from God and to receive mercy for the wrongs we do and have done.
If we deny who He is, we will stay condemned. We remain guilty of our sins and can not stand before a Holy God.
The truth is that the unforgivable sin can be forgiven if we accept Jesus as the Son of God and stop calling the Holy Spirit a liar by denying the convicting work He continues to do in our hearts. He is revealing who Jesus is. But there is another spirit at work. Which spirit will we listen to?
