The Effect of Giving Responsibility to Others – Acts 6:1-7

Philip serves as Executive Director of Grace Fellowship Canada. For over 20 years, he's been on a mission, planting churches from coast to coast in Canada.

The early church was growing—and facing growing pains. They cared generously for each other, especially widows, with no safety net back then. But a hitch: non-Jewish widows were overlooked in food distribution. The apostles, stretched thin, gathered everyone and said, “We must focus on teaching God’s Word and prayer.”

Acts 6:3 (CSB)

“Brothers and sisters, select… seven men of good reputation, full of the Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint to this duty.”

I love this! The leaders knew they couldn’t do it all. They picked men of character—godly, wise, Spirit-filled—not just food organizers. Why? These men would care for God’s people, steward His resources, and lead others. That takes maturity. I love how they were commissioned publicly—everyone saw who they were, why they were chosen, and the authority given. Wow, that clarity sets them up to lead well, no grumbling, no confusion.

The result?

Acts 6:7 (CSB)

“So the preaching about God spread, the disciples in Jerusalem increased greatly in number, and a large group of priests became obedient to the faith.”

Take this in! The Word spread with leaders freed to teach and pray and the church showing real love for one another. Disciples grew. Even priests turned to Jesus! Wow! That’s the power of shared responsibility done right.

Father, help us as leaders to share the load with those of good character. Call godly people to take responsibility in Your church. Help us serve and love each other well. Give our leaders more chances to teach Your Word, and may many come to know Jesus and His love.
