Jesus Gives Us His Spirit – John 14:15-26 (CSB)
Jesus is preparing His disciples for life without Him physically by their side. He’s just taught them to pray in His name—a game-changer—and now He says, “If you love me, you will keep my commands” (John 14:15). Then comes the promise:
John 14:16-17 “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, to be with you forever. He is the Spirit of truth”
The world won’t get it—won’t see or know Him—but for those who love Jesus, the Spirit remains with us and lives in us. God had this planned all along: even as Jesus readied to leave, He ensured His disciples wouldn’t be abandoned. He wasn’t just thinking of them, but of us too—every follower waiting for His return.
Jesus doubles down: “I’m not leaving you as orphans; I’m coming back. Because I live, you will live too” (14:18-19, paraphrased). Later, He adds:
John 14:26 “The Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and remind you of everything I have told you”
Imagine these disciples had walked with Jesus, yet they didn’t always grasp what He meant until later. Now He’s leaving—would they stumble in the dark? No. The Spirit would guide them, teach them, and bring Jesus’ words back to life in their hearts. The same is true for us.
I’m struck by Jesus’ love here. He didn’t just die for us; He gave us His Spirit to carry us through. While we wait for Him, we’re not alone—His Spirit leads us, reminds us of His truth, and calls us to obey, proving our love for Him. Because He lives, we live. And I’m so grateful for that gift.
Are we listening to His Spirit, guide, teach, and remind us of what Jesus has taught us? This is a precious gift from Jesus.
