I love how real the characters in the Bible are. They’re not just figures of faith; they’re people like us who laugh, cry, get sick, tired, and confused. Take Peter, for instance. Here’s Jesus, about to reveal His divine nature to Peter, James, and John.
Luke 9:29-31 As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. They discussed his departure, which he was about to fulfill in Jerusalem.
Imagine this scene – it’s otherworldly, miraculous. They’ve seen Jesus in His glory, conversing with Moses and Elijah. Unbelievable, right?
But the Bible keeps it real. Look at Peter’s response:
Luke 9:33 As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what he was saying.)
Peter just starts talking, perhaps thinking of celebrating with the Feast of Booths, overwhelmed by the holiness of the moment. Yet, Jesus doesn’t get irritated by Peter’s blathering. He knew Peter would react this way, yet chose to share this moment with him.
Later, these three would dedicate their lives to sharing Jesus’ glory, with Peter even laying down his life for this truth.
We, too, might not always grasp what God is doing in our lives. We might fumble our words or actions in His presence, but thank God He includes us in His plans. He lets us, with all our human imperfections, be part of revealing His glory to the world.
Thank you, Jesus, for trusting us, the blathering followers, to be part of your team. Help us to recognize all you’re doing and to share your glory with others.
