In Romans chapter 1, Paul helps us understand the serious consequences of turning away from God. He starts by saying, “The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness” (Romans 1:18). We see that God’s truth is actually visible through what He has made, as Paul points out, “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse” (Romans 1:20).

Even though people knew about God, Paul notes, “they did not glorify him as God or give thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened” (Romans 1:21). This led to a significant shift – “they exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal human beings and birds and animals and reptiles” (Romans 1:23). As a result, Paul writes, “God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity… They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator” (Romans 1:24-25).

This pattern of God “giving them over” continues. He “gave them over to shameful lusts” (Romans 1:26), resulting in what is unnatural and indecent. And finally, “because they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, God gave them over to a depraved mind” (Romans 1:28), leading to a list of unrighteousness, evil, greed, and wickedness (Romans 1:29). Even though they know that such actions deserve death, they not only do these things themselves but also “approve of those who practice them” (Romans 1:32).

What we see in this passage is a clear progression. When we choose to ignore or reject God’s truth, we move further away from Him. In His justice, God allows us to follow the path we choose, and this path leads to darker places. It’s a sobering reminder that our choices have real consequences.

Let’s ask ourselves: In what areas of my life might I be tempted to exchange God’s truth for something else? Am I truly honoring God with my choices, or am I at risk of drifting away?

God allows us the freedom to choose Him or reject Him, but as Romans 1 shows us, choosing against Him has serious implications. May we be a people who consistently choose to acknowledge God, seek His truth, and live in a way that brings Him honor.
