In the opening of Romans, Paul underscores the connection between faith and obedience. He describes his apostleship as a calling “to bring about the obedience of faith” (Romans 1:5). He expresses gratitude for the Roman believers, noting, “the news of your faith is being reported in all the world” (Romans 1:8). Paul longed to visit them, eager “to be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith, both yours and mine” (Romans 1:12).

Paul was unashamed of the gospel, declaring it “the power of God unto salvation” (Romans 1:16). Why?

Romans 1:17

“For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith, just as it is written: ‘The righteous will live by faith.’”

We are saved by grace through faith alone, not by our works or obedience (Ephesians 2:8-9). Yet, Paul’s words reveal that genuine faith naturally produces obedience. The Roman believers’ faith, evidenced by their obedient lives, was a testimony known throughout the Roman world, inspiring Paul and others. Paul longed to be mutually encouraged—Paul’s faith strengthening theirs, and theirs strengthening his—knowing this would build them up in Christ. In verse 17, Paul explains that the gospel reveals God’s righteousness “from faith to faith.” Those who trust in Christ for salvation live out their faith through obedience, reflecting the righteousness they have received. Quoting Habakkuk, Paul affirms, “The righteous will live by faith.” This righteousness is Christ’s, imputed to us by grace through faith, and those who truly believe will obey Him, as Jesus said, “If you love Me, you will keep My commands” (John 14:15).

Faith and obedience are intertwined—not as a means of salvation, but as the fruit of a transformed heart.

A life of obedience shines brightly, becoming a credible witness to Christ.

I am asking myself, does my obedience reflect a living faith that points others to Jesus? Is my faith, expressed through obedience, a testimony that encourages others? Let us pray that our lives, rooted in faith and grace, demonstrate a vibrant obedience that glorifies Christ and draws others to Him.
