Are We Listening to the Spirit? – Acts 8:26-40

Written by Philip Bryant

Philip serves as Executive Director of Grace Fellowship Canada. For over 20 years, he's been on a mission, planting churches from coast to coast in Canada.

An Ethiopian official, high in the court, had gone to Jerusalem to worship. Now he’s riding home in his chariot, reading Isaiah 53—searching for truth.

Acts 8:29-30 (CSB)
“The Spirit said to Philip, ‘Go and join that chariot.’ So Philip ran up… heard him reading… and said, ‘Do you understand what you’re reading?’”

I love his reply: “How can I, unless someone guides me?” Philip steps in, sharing the gospel from Isaiah—pointing him to Jesus. Incredible—and it gets better!

Acts 8:36-38 (CSB)
“As they traveled… the eunuch said, ‘Look, there’s water. What would keep me from being baptized?’ …They both went down into the water, and Philip baptized him.”

You’ve got to love this! The eunuch finds his Savior and jumps at the chance to show it—baptized right there!

Acts 8:39-40 (CSB)
“When they came up out of the water, the Spirit… carried Philip away… The eunuch… went on his way rejoicing. Philip appeared in Azotus… preaching the gospel in all the towns until… Caesarea.”

Wow! The Spirit led Philip to someone seeking truth, and through his obedience, a life was changed. What about us? Are we listening like Philip? God’s still working in the hearts of those seeking Him, and we’re His ambassadors, His reconcilers, His emissaries—called to bring the good news. I wonder how many opportunities I’ve missed, not hearing His Spirit. Father, tune our hearts to You! Make us bold ambassadors, faithful reconcilers, eager emissaries—ready to share Jesus with those longing for Him.
