Adopt Christ’s Attitude – Philippians 2:3-11
Selfishness comes naturally to us. Whether it’s protecting our reputation, pushing our agenda, or simply putting our comfort first, we default to “me first.” But Paul calls us to something radically different:
Philippians 2:3-4 (CSB) “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”
This isn’t just good advice—Paul immediately shows us the ultimate example: Jesus Christ.
Philippians 2:6-8 (CSB) “…who, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God as something to be exploited. Instead he emptied himself by assuming the form of a servant, taking on the likeness of humanity. And when he had come as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even to death on a cross.”
Think about this: Jesus, who had every right to demand worship and service, chose the opposite. He emptied Himself, became a servant, and died the most humiliating death possible. The Creator served His creation. The King became the lowest slave.
That’s the attitude Paul calls us to adopt—radical humility that puts others first, even when it costs us. In a world screaming “Me first!”, we’re called to say “You first.”
But here’s the incredible truth that follows:
Philippians 2:9-11 (CSB) “For this reason God highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow—in heaven and on earth and under the earth—and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
Because Jesus humbled Himself completely, God exalted Him completely. Every knee will bow. Every tongue will confess His Lordship. His self-sacrifice led to ultimate glory.
When we adopt Christ’s attitude of humble service, we’re not just being nice—we’re reflecting the character of our exalted King. Our love for others becomes worship, our service becomes witness, and our humility brings glory to God the Father.
Today, look for opportunities to put others first. Encourage someone. Listen more than you speak. Serve without recognition. Let the Holy Spirit transform your heart to truly value others above yourself.
As we live with Christ’s attitude, we point others to the One who is worthy of all worship—Jesus Christ, the humble servant who is now the exalted Lord.
Prayer: Father, forgive our selfishness and pride. Transform our hearts by Your Spirit to have the same attitude as Christ Jesus. Help us value others above ourselves and serve with humility. May our lives reflect His character and bring glory to Your name. Through Jesus we pray, Amen.
