What should we do then?

This is the question those who were convicted in their hearts asked.

John the Baptist was preaching:

Luke 3:9

The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”

The people were convicted and we see them asking:

Luke 3:10-14

What should we do then?” the crowd asked.

11 John answered, “The man with two tunics should share with him who has none, and the one who has food should do the same.”

12 Tax collectors also came to be baptized. “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?”

13 “Don’t collect any more than you are required to,” he told them.

14 Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?”

He replied, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely—be content with your pay.”

John warned them that those who did not produce good fruit would be judged. The people responded with the right question, “What should we do?”

John gave them sound advice, and it is interesting that Luke recorded a cross-section of people.

Are we asking God this question today? When posed with the thought that all those who are not bearing good fruit will be judged is our first thought how can I change? What should I do? Or do I think it refers to others but not me?

Fruit that represents repentance and that shows a love for others and a love for God. This is good fruit. Share with others what we have, not taking advantage of others when we hold power or influence—being content with what we have.

There are more answers to what good fruit is for our lives. Are we asking the question?

What, then, should we do?
