God was setting the tone as the church began. The Holy Spirit gave them boldness to proclaim Jesus’ resurrection and a heart to share everything, caring for each other.
Acts 4:34-35 (CSB)
“There was not a needy person among them because all those who owned lands or houses sold them, brought the proceeds… and laid them at the apostles’ feet. This was then distributed… as any had need.”
Wow, that’s incredible! They sacrificed so no brother or sister went without. But us humans? We’re a mess sometimes. That generosity brought honor, and some craved the spotlight more than the giving.
Acts 5:1-2 (CSB)
“But a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property. However, he kept back part of the proceeds… and brought a portion… and laid it at the apostles’ feet.”
That “but” says it all. Luke contrasts selfless folks like Barnabas with Ananias and Sapphira. They sold property, held back some cash—fine, it was theirs. Peter later says, “It was yours… the money was yours” (Acts 5:4). So what’s the issue? Not the keeping, but the pretending—acting generous for applause, not love.
Peter saw their hearts. They lied to the church, to the Holy Spirit, and God struck them down—dead on the spot. Talk about sobering! The church trembled. Don’t play pious for clout. Everything’s from God anyway—why not give quietly when you see a need? Not for your glory, but for others’ good.
Then great fear came on the whole church and on all who heard these things.
God set the tone for the early church not to play around and virtue signal but to be real and love one another from the heart. He sees our hearts. Ananias and Sapphira tried to impress, but God wants real love, not show. We can’t fool Him, so why pretend? Everything we have is His gift anyway. When His Spirit nudges us to give sacrificially, let’s do it—not for praise, but for others’ good. That’s the sacrifice God loves. It blesses those in need, shows the world His people are real, and brings Him glory.
How about we quit chasing approval and rest in His generosity, sharing it with His family? We can’t lie to God, but we can love like He does, and when we do, He gets glory, and everyone benefits.
