Why did Jesus do miraculous signs?

In the Gospel of John, we find Jesus, His disciples, and His mother at a wedding. They run out of wine, and Mary tells the attendants to do whatever Jesus says. He has them pour water into a picture, then take a cup from it and bring it to the host.

The host tells the bridegroom, you have saved the best for last.

We read in John 2:11

This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed at Cana in Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him.

Later we find Jesus going to the temple courts and finding people taking advantage of those coming to worship God. Selling the animals for sacrifices, Jesus makes a whip and drives out the money changers and those overpriced merchants. When asked upon which authority He had to do such things, Jesus responded, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it up again in three days.”

John 2:20-22

The Jews replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?” 21 But the temple he had spoken of was his body. 22 After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the Scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken.

We see Jesus was doing other miraculous things while there in Jerusalem celebrating the Passover and we read in John 2:23

John 2:23

Now while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many people saw the miraculous signs he was doing and believed in his name.

Jesus did miraculous signs so that we would place our trust in Him and believe in His name. He did this for His disciples, He did this for the religious leaders, He did this for the people.

Now we have a record. We have the historical witness of Jesus’ miracles, fulfilling prophecy, and Him rising from the dead.

He did all this so that we to might place our faith in Him and believe.

This is why John wrote his gospel or account of Jesus.

John 20:30-31

30 Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
