These are Jesus’ words. John the Baptist just baptized him. This was an incredible moment as God the Father affirms His Son and the Holy Spirit descends on Him.
God has Jesus sent to the wilderness for forty days of testing by Satan. Then we see this happen:
Mark 1:14-15
After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. 15 “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!”
Interesting. John was put in prison and later beheaded. John’s ministry to prepare the way for Jesus was now complete. Jesus is now preaching, “The kingdom of God is near – repent and believe.”
And as He is going
Mark 1:16-18
As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 17 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.”
Jesus invites them to come and follow Him. He said He would make them fishers of men. I must say the proof is in the pudding. Two thousand years later, there continues to be a growing number of people following Him.
I believe His invitation is still available to us. He invites us to let go of what our lives are about and follow Him.
I love Simon (Peter) and Andrew’s response.
Verse 18
At once, they left their nets and followed him.
What will we do? Keep fishing? Or drop our nets and follow Him?
